The history of the TU Chemnitz goes back to the year 1836, when it was founded as the "Königliche Gewerbeschule zu Chemnitz" (Royal Vocational School of Chemnitz) and has since developed into the third largest university in Saxony with about 11 000 students, 8 faculties and 162 professorial chairs. The TU Chemnitz is characterized above all by uniquely combined study courses such as "Sensorics and Cognitive Psychology". In addition, the university is particularly keen to support young scientists. For this purpose, the "Center for Young Scientists" was founded in 2014. This centre is intended to provide young scientists with mentoring opportunities and promote networking and careers.

Another focus is set on internationality. Currently 2500 of all students come from abroad. The university also maintains cooperative relationships with more than 100 partner institutions all over the world. Through these cooperations, students and scientists can realize joint research projects and stays abroad. In addition, Chemnitz University of Technology is actively involved in international network organizations for the further development of the global knowledge society, such as the "Academic Consortium 21", in which 19 of the world's most respected educational and research institutions deal with the role of universities in the 21st century.
